Apart from school, running is her main focus. Tennis is ‘a break,’ she said, and Newsome needs it.

Her academic load is ridiculous. Every class Newsome takes at Elizabethtown is either honors or A.P. ‘ apart from guitar.

That break turned into a passion and it paid off for Newsome, as she was voted Sophomore of the Year by the area coaches and The News-Enterprise staff.

‘I felt like throughout the season I was progressively getting better and to a place I thought I could get to,’ Newsome said on the phone from Transylvania University, where she’s away this summer at the Governor’s School of Entrepreneurs.
