“The way I see it, girls soccer is the equivalent to boys football ‘ it is one of the premier girls sports in the country,” Brooks said. “You cannot have your premier girls sports being played during a ‘disadvantageous’ season.
New Hudsonville girls soccer coach inherits a team with a passion for the sport
HUDSONVILLE – The Hudsonville girls soccer team has a new look, with one of the youngest coaches in West Michigan taking over this spring.
Holly VanNoord, a 2012 graduate of Unity Christian and recent graduate of Liberty University in Virginia, is the new Hudsonville head coach. One of the premier goalkeepers to come out of West Michigan, VanNoord helped lead Unity to three state titles and Liberty to three NCAA tournament appearances during her career as a record-setting goalkeeper both in high school and college.
“The senior class alone is incredible,” VanNoord said. “Their leadership is huge. That is very helpful on a coach. All the girls are just so engaged. We have seniors off the bench that are just so encouraging. I can put them in at any time and they are going to give 100 percent.”
Seniors Sarah Michienzi and Kendall Griffioen are anchors on the defensive end of the field, while seniors Abby Sieggreen and Madison Dudley are leaders in the midfield.
The Eagles are solid in goal with junior Mallory Hawks, who has already made several awesome saves this spring, according to VanNoord.

Bears QB Mitch Trubisky to speak at Journal Star Best of Preps gala
PEORIA — Chicago Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky will headline the second annual Journal Star Best of Central Illinois Preps awards gala, set for June 25 at the Peoria Civic Center.
The event will honor all of the Journal Star all-stars and players of the year for the 2017-18 school year, celebrate the area’s state championship teams and announce the winners of six special awards.
“I look forward to supporting the successes of local high school student athletes in the Peoria community,” Trubisky said. “I understand the commitment and dedication it takes to play a sport, and to be recognized as an all-star is extra special. But there’s also a team of people behind the athlete, like the parents and coaches, who also deserve recognition. I look forward to taking part in an evening that celebrates all of that.”
“The thing that struck me about last year’s event was the look on the faces of not only the athletes, but also the coaches and parents who contributed to the success of the young men and women who represented the best from our area in their respective sports,” Journal Star publisher Ken Mauser said. “The excitement of being recognized for hard work and success is one of the best feelings that one can experience.”
All-star teams and player of the year already have been announced for the fall and winter sports seasons. Honorees for the spring sports – baseball, softball, track and field, girls soccer and boys tennis – will be announced as usual upon the conclusion of those seasons.
