Hello, Dave: The nuts and bolts of the robot revolution as told by a human

Hal 9000 was a weakling. Today’s robots are far more powerful and capable. Let’s hope their emotional maturity keeps pace.

Artificial intelligence (AI) was the major topic of discussion at the recent World Economic Forum in Davos (that, and whatever Donald Trump was up to that week). Meanwhile Suncor has announced it is building a fleet of 150 robotic trucks to transport ore at its operations around Fort McMurray. People want to know—are any jobs safe from the robot invasion?

“Today there are approximately two million robot arms at work in the manufacturing sector,” says Martin Jagersand, a computer-science professor at the University of Alberta. “Cars are welded, painted, and partly assembled by robots. Circuit boards for home electronics, computers, and phones are assembled. When TVs first entered our homes they cost about a month’s salary. Now a basic model costs a couple of days’ salary. That’s partly due to the increase in automated production.”

But as robots evolve, so does the definition of the term itself. Must robots look like Robby, star of Forbidden Planet and Lost in Space? Or can they be more like the mutinous HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey? Is it really a robot if it can’t chase you around, waving its bendy arms, possibly complaining in a posh accent?

In 1991 James Cameron’s cautionary blockbuster Terminator II: Judgment Day was packing theatres. But we failed to heed its warning. That same year our robotic future began to take shape when a company called iRobot, launched the previous year by a group of MIT students, unveiled Genghis, a six-legged robot designed for extraterrestrial exploration. (The prototype is now housed in the Smithsonian.) But the company’s real commercial breakthrough would arrive in 2002—the Roomba home vacuum. The rise of the machines would have to wait—this one was not going to rise above your ankles. Thanks to the Home Shopping Network, Roomba was soon creeping over floors in millions of households, a Trojan bot invited through the gates. As Vladimir Lenin once said, “The capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will hang them.”
