Concept cars are part of the automotive industry, and have been for the last 50 years. We love them, but the problem is a lot of them never make it into production. Car manufacturers often like to just give us teasers of up and coming ‘design influences’, as opposed to actually building the damn sexy car they’ve just mocked up. It is an annoying notion, so with that being said, here are the 10 best looking concepts that were never given the go-ahead.
21st century BMW M1
BMW have already created an M1, and it was rather good. It never really sold well – mainly because it was so overpriced you’d be better off buying twenty tonnes of gold – but that doesn’t mean it was a bad car.
The original M1 now resides under ‘classic’, thanks to its creamy straight-six engine and bonkers-like performance, so when BMW unleashed a 21st century take on the M1 with this concept, the automotive world collectively started to take their pants down… but, unfortunately, there is a ‘but’, the Bavarians would never build this sexual piece of steel and technology.
What a waste of everyone’s time.
Chevrolet Corvette Four-Rotor
Chevrolet isn’t really that famous for cool cars – apart from the Corvette – so when they gave us the Corvette Four-Rotor, we were rather thrilled.
This 1970’s concept was not only James Bond cool, but also bloody gorgeous, too! Oddly, this concept also featured a wankle engine – like you’d find in a Mazda RX-8 – and would have pushed 400bhp if produced.
God-awful name aside, the Maserati Birdcage is one of the sexiest concept cars ever made, thanks mostly to its wheels that have the circumference comparable to Mars and humps so sexual even Fergie from The Black Eyed Peas would be jealous.
Oh, and it was rumored to pack 700bhp, too – those Italians – their lack of trust in the world’s multi-millionaires to buy this car. They definitely would have!
