Briana Williams of Northeast (Oakland Park, Fla.) has been named the 2018-19 ALL-USA Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

The ALL-USA Girls Track and Field teams for the 2018-19 season are coordinated by Fred Baer, the founder of Track and Field Writers of America. Girls selections are made by Mike Kennedy, the high school editor of Track and Field News.

Criteria included ranking on USA TODAY Sports and’Track and Field News’national lists and the number of top performances along with head-to-head competition during the regular season and in major postseason meets.

Standout performances by these athletes led to individual and team success during the 2018-2019 school year:

Jonathan French, Parkview: French, a senior catcher, hit .472 with 13 home runs, 12 doubles, four triples and 61 RBIs in 106 at-bats for Parkview, which won its second consecutive Class AAAAAAA championship and finished with several top-20 national rankings. French walked 30 times and had a .585 on-base percentage. French signed to play baseball at Clemson University.

Alyssa Sherling, Ola: The senior was the Georgia Cheerleading Coaches Association cheerleader of the year and led her team to a second-place finish in Class AAAAAA. She was a three-time all-region performer and was voted team MVP this year. ‘She’s an incredibly hard worker. She volunteers, holds a job and gives her all to her team,’ Ola coach Stacey Schmuhl said. Sherling will cheer next year at the University of Georgia.

2019 ALL-COUNTY GYMNASTICS TEAM – Forsyth County News Online

The William & Mary signee had her best high school season as a senior, winning all-around at the county championship meet in 38.550, at the state prelims in 38.350, and at the state meet in 38.675.

Led the Wolverines to the team title at the county meet and their third straight state title, winning the Class 6-7A crown.

* * *

Won all-around in Class A-5A state meet with a score of 38.800, the top score of any county gymnast at that meet. Finished second in all-around at county meet, with 38.475, and in state prelims, with 37.900.

* * *

Improved massively in all-around from state prelims to finals, going from 35.375 to 37.025, which was good for sixth.

Track and field: Denton ISD teams excel at area meet

RIGHT ‘ Guyer’s Caleb Hulbin, right, hands the baton to Seth Meador during the 800-meter relay at a Class 6A area track and field meet Thursday in Keller. Hulbin, Meador, Zhighlil McMillan and Jaysaun Smith earned a second-place finish in a time of 1:29.78.

BELOW ‘ Braswell’s Breyonna Wright runs the second leg of the 800 relay in the Class 5A area meet at Keller. Braswell won the relay with a time of 1:47.00.

KELLER ‘ The Ryan boys sure didn’t have any issues carrying their momentum from the district meet two weeks ago into Thursday’s District 7-5A/8-5A area meet.
