Aptos’ Natalia Ackerman named Cal-Hi Sports’ D-III State Player of the Year | Girls basketball

Aptos High senior basketball star Natalia Ackerman ‘ 6-foot-1 forward/center committed to play next season at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo ‘ posted 18 double-doubles this year.

So, it’s only fitting that she double up on postseason honors. The Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League MVP on Saturday was named Cal-Hi Sports’ D-III State Player of the Year. She is the first player from a Santa Cruz County school to earn state player of the year honors.

‘I’m completely shocked,’ said Ackerman, Aptos’ all-time leading scorer. ‘It’s a crazy award to win.’

Woodside Priory’s 6-4 center Ila Lane, a freshman at UC Santa Barbara, won the award last season. But she’s not the headliner on the star-studded list of former winners. University of Oregon star Sabrina Ionescu ‘ the likely No. 1 pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft after becoming the first college player to pass the 2,000-point, 1,000-rebound, 1,000 assist plateau ‘ earned the honor from three straight years (2014-16) and was also named Ms. Basketball State Player of the Year in ’16.
