The secrets of the ’63-’67 Chevrolet Corvette, perhaps the best-looking American sports car there’s ever been, are foreign to many Europeans, but they’re exciting – and that’s without exploring the arcane world of factory order codes like L72 (427 cu in, 425 horsepower), M-22 (four-speed, close ratio, heavy duty transmission), C48 (heater/ defroster delete), G81 (Positraction) or J56 (heavy duty brakes).

The sensationally muscled second-generation ’63 Corvette was largely the work of designer Larry Shinoda, operating under the firm direction of design boss Bill Mitchell. And the ‘Vette’s engineering was looked after by Zora Arkus-Duntov, one of the most famous names behind this legendary car and a man who had to do battle with GM’s bean counters (one reason why the brakes weren’t the hottest thing on this car, until they overheated), and Mitchell himself when it came to the ’63’s achingly stylish split rear ‘screen.
Duntov didn’t like its view-obscuring presence, and neither did many journalists, which is why it went for ’64, but these divided-window beauties are among the most desirable ‘Vettes today.
