The third time was beginning to feel awfully like the first two when Notre Dame-Green Pond senior forward Cassie Murphy hit the locker room at halftime of Friday night’s Colonial League girls basketball championship at Freedom High School’s McIntyre Gymnasium.

Not only was Murphy a part of a team that lost in title games her freshman and junior seasons but here she was, looking at the biggest first-half deficit Notre Dame had faced all season, as unheralded Moravian Academy led 22-16.

Sophomore point forward Antonia Bates put on a fabulous display by scoring 19 of her career-high tying 21 points in the second half and Murphy finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds as the top-seeded Crusaders held off the No. 3 Lions 49-46 for the school’s seventh league title and fifth since joining the Colonial League.
