Laguna Beach girls’ water polo gets past San Clemente in regional opener

Six days after capturing the CIF Southern Section Division 1 title, the Laguna Beach High girls’ water polo team set out to win another title in its final tournament of the season.

Laguna is the top seed for the CIF State Southern California Regional Division I tournament, which started Friday at Segerstrom High.

The regional tournament, in its second year, is a bit a grind. The Breakers (30-1) don’t necessarily feel like they have anything to prove.

‘I don’t know if there’s any team that’s really that excited about this tournament, to be honest with you,’ Laguna Beach coach Ethan Damato said. ‘But yeah, if we’re going to be here, we want to do our best. We talked about that. We’re going to put our best foot forward, and hopefully that means winning.’
