Mercedes-AMG planning 6-cylinder option for GT sports car?

Mercedes-AMG is working on a mid-cycle update for its GT sports car due in time for the 2020 model year. At the top end, we know AMG is planning a so-called ‘clubsport’ package for the GT R model.

For all the info. The complete details.

But judging by our latest spy shots we could also be looking at a new six-cylinder option being added at the bottom of the rung.

The latest prototype sports four round exhaust tips, a design that so far has only been used by AMG on cars with six-cylinder powertrains, like the recently revealed GT43 4-Door Coupe (shown below) and CLS53.

After Tesla: 15 New Cars That Could Dethrone The Roadster (And 5 That Already Have)

The 2020 Tesla Roadster is the second-generation of the 2008 Roadster, Tesla’s first production car. With a 0 to 60 mph time of 1.9 seconds, it’s supposed to be quicker than any street-legal production car to date. It will be an all-electric battery-powered four-seater, and Elon Musk has said that higher performance trim levels will be available beyond the base specifications.

So what will you get for this $200,000 speedster? Pretty much nothing like you’ve seen before. With a potential feature called ‘SpaceX option package,’ this car could seriously have 10 cold gas thrusters attached to it. It will reportedly have a top speed of 250 mph, and with its 8.9-second quarter-mile time, it’s hoping to outperform other supercars of the day and set new production car records. Lofty ambitions, but if anyone can make it happen, Elon Musk and Tesla are a good bet.

Mercedes-AMG E53 2019 review

To say Mercedes-AMG is popular in Australia is like saying the young people are fond of Drake, or that football fans seem to appreciate Ronaldo’s skills.

Per head of population we buy more of the three-pointed star’s go-fast specials than any other country on the globe. Typically, between 15 and 20 per cent of all Mercs sold here are of the AMG variety.’

In recent years Mercedes-AMG has broadened its offering to include options slightly less insane that the full-fat, twin-turbo ’63-series’ V8 models sitting at the top of its large car range.
