Amid unsubstantiated rumors that the MHSAA would cancel or postpone football within 24 hours of the Big Ten’s announcement, the organization said nothing has changed: The MHSAA still intends on making a decision on competition for football, volleyball and boys soccer by Thursday, Aug. 20.

‘Those decisions at the college level, they definitely become part of the conversation as we move forward, but they don’t necessarily change it,’ MHSAA media and content coordinator Geoff Kimmerly told MLive Tuesday afternoon.

The Big Ten announced Tuesday afternoon that it was canceling fall sports because of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to multiple reports, the Pac-12 is doing the same.

The entire state has concerns for what the fall seasons may look like. As of right now, the Michigan High School Athletic Association has a plan for the return of sports in the fall.

‘It’s going to take a lot of cooperation on the part of schools,’ Johnson said. ‘We’re gonna go until something tells us it’s no longer a good idea to go.’

Pay spring sports coaches? Michigan high schools consider the options

Coronavirus has already claimed the high school spring sports season. Now it’s coming for those coaches’ wallets.

School districts across Michigan are grappling with unique questions regarding the pay of spring coaches. Should they be paid if the season was canceled? Considering the uncertainty of funding moving forward, can they be?

“I think it’s fair to (pay)’the coaches who are preparing,” Ann Arbor Skyline girls soccer coach Chris Morgan said. “If the school district only gave half, that would probably be fair, but I’m not going to hold my breath on it.”
