The best matchup of the Saratoga Race Course meet came on Sunday, the third day of the 40-day thoroughbred meet. There might not be another race here this summer with as much anticipation over two horses meeting on the race track.

The race was the Grade I, $300,000 Coaching Club American Oaks for 3-year-old fillies. The heavyweights in the field of five were Monomoy Girl, winner of seven of eight career starts and all four this year, and Midnight Bisou, whose resume had four wins in five career starts this year.

Monomoy Girl solidified her spot at the top of the division with an easy three-length win in the 11/8-mile race in front of an announced crowd of 26,208 on Saratoga baseball cap giveaway day.

Quite a lot has been going on:

Monomoy Girl romps in CCA Oaks

Moving on.

“I would like to think so,” Monomoy Girl’s trainer Brad Cox said in the winner’s circle after the race when asked about wrapping up the 3-year-old Eclipse Award.

Ridden by Florent Geroux, Monomoy Girl went straight to the lead and dared anyone to go with her. She set slow enough fractions, completing the first quarter mile in 24.12 seconds, the half in 48.23 and six furlongs in 1:12.43.

“The fractions were great up front,” Cox said. “When I saw the 48 … I don’t think she’s ever went that slow.”

It set up the big filly for the expected run from Midnight Bisou and jockey Mike Smith, who flew in from California for the one ride. But there was no big run coming. Midnight Bisou, the 6-5 second choice, did make a move to the outside of Monomoy Girl heading into the stretch and it looked like the race was on.

Monomoy Girl Continues Dominant Season with CCA Oaks Romp

When Midnight Bisou dominated the Grade 2 Mother Goose Stakes by six lengths on June 30 at Belmont Park, it appeared there might be some competition after all for streaking Monomoy Girl for the Eclipse Award as leading 3-year-old filly.

Moving on.

Front-running Monomoy Girl turned back her would-be arch-rival by three comfortable lengths in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks on Sunday at Saratoga Race Course to dispel the slightest doubt concerning her division.
