New Range Rover Sport HST Has A Straight

The Range Rover Sport HST will set UK customers back ‘81,250 ($104,733). It remains to be seen if the car will be sold elsewhere.

First here as indicated. Follow this.

This is the new Range Rover Sport HST, the first production vehicle from Jaguar Land Rover to launch with a mild-hybrid powertrain.

Powering the Range Rover Sport HST is the all-new 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder gaasoline engine that boasts 395 hp and 405 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque. The engine replaces the company’s V6 petrol and is special due to its implementation of an electric supercharger and a twin-scroll turbocharger.

Quite a lot has been going on:

Is this the most un-PC car on the planet?

RANGE ROVER SPORT SVR Base price: $209,900 Powertrain and performance: 5.0-litre supercharged petrol V8, 423kW/700Nm, 8-speed automatic, AWD, Combined economy 12.8 litres per 100km. Vital statistics: 4879mm long, 1803mm high, 2923mm wheelbase, luggage capacity 780 litres, 21-inch alloy wheels. We like: That belligerent noise, the feral acceleration, the superb interior;’it’s a proper Range Rover. We don’t like: The price, the occasionally fidgety ride and we wouldn’t have gone for that pimp black-on-white interior/exterior combo.

It would seem these days that you can’t build a large SUV without offering’a ridiculously over-powered, over-the-top version of it for no other reason than “because you can”. And now Land Rover has upped the crazy on its already quite mad Range Rover Sport SVR. And the results are magnificent.

Land Rover adds Range Rover Sport HST for 2016

Land Rover is set to introduce the new Range Rover Sport HST limited edition at the New York Auto Show next week. The new, 380-hp model will slot in between the 340-hp base model and the 550-hp supercharged version.

The Range Rover Sport HST gets smoked head- and taillights, a black roof and new roof spoiler, giving the SUV a menacing look. It also comes with dark, 21-inch wheels and upgraded brakes with red calipers. The hood, front fender vents, grille and fog lamp bezels are also finished in gloss black.

The HST is equipped with a 380-hp, 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 engine and a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. The chassis is tuned for sharper responses, according to Land Rover, while a single-speed transfer case and Torsen differential distribute power. The Terrain Response system, which adjusts suspension, steering and throttle settings, gets a unique ‘dynamic mode’ programmed specifically for the HST.

Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged review

Since we first heard that Land Rover was going to build the Range Rover Sport it was always going to be interesting to see how it would address the seemingly diametrically opposed objectives of creating a car that was both sporting in nature and utterly true to the Land Rover brand. The result is not perfect ‘ in fact it’s rather flawed ‘ but as a whole it is charming, capable, undeniably sporting and, above all, a Land Rover from bumper to bumper.

In fact it’s possible that the single biggest mistake Land Rover made with the Sport was the name. A Freelander Sport is a Freelander with stiffer springs and this naming strategy is replicated across the motor industry. And because it has been made to look so similar to the Range Rover, there will be a natural propensity for customer to view the Sport as little more than a fizzed-up Rangie. Spend five minutes in the company of the Sport Supercharged and you’ll realise how absurdly this misrepresents the car.
