Sponsorship Woes Park Schumacher For Winternationals

Lack of sponsorship will prevent eight-time NHRA Top Fuel world champion Tony Schumacher from competing in this weekend’s prestigious 59th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals. The event at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in Southern California is the 2019 season-opener for the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

Schumacher, the 49-year-old son of team-owner Don Schumacher, announced the shocking decision Monday on his Facebook page. Schumacher is the winningest driver in Top Fuel history with 84 national event victories, 87 pole positions and a qualifying streak of 367 races dating to Heartland Park Topeka in 2003.

Steve Torrence plans to pick up where he left off at Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals

The last time Steve Torrence was at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, he was wrapping up an unprecedented run to his first world title. The Top Fuel star finished off his history-making run in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship with a victory in Pomona, becoming the first driver in NHRA history to win all six playoff races.

He heads back to the track full of good vibes this weekend for the NHRA’s annual iconic opener, the tradition-rich 59th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by, but Torrence remains just as motivated. He won 11 races a year ago in his 10,000-horsepower Capco Contractors dragster and insists the drive that paved the way for his first world title hasn’t waned one bit.

Automakers Attracted To NHRA, Signaling Sanction’s Upward Arc

Steve Beahm, who bears the impossibly long job title of head of Parts and Service (Mopar) and Passenger Car Brands for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles ‘ North America, offered a creative description of Don Schumacher Racing.

‘Your fingers are different sizes, and they’re different lengths. That’s what makes a good team, and that’s what Don has in his racing team,’ Beahm said.

Hand in hand with that interpretation is the robust participation in drag racing from Chevrolet, Ford, Mopar/Dodge and Toyota ‘ each with its own special interests and sense of what brings the most return on its investment. It’s debatable which chicken-and-egg scenario has the sequence in the right order, but that variety either reflects the NHRA’s upward trajectory in a static motorsports landscape or is the cause of it.
