Finally’after 11 years of production, Nissan is finally ready to replace the dusty 370Z with an all-new Z-car, adding a seventh branch to the automaker’s iconic sports car family tree. While the so-called Z-Proto is just a concept for now, it hints that the next Z should be one of the better sports cars to ever wear the famed Nissan “Z”-car badge.

Naturally, that got us thinking about the first six-generations of Nissan Z-cars that have come and gone. For all of its fans and sustained longevity, the Z is a car of contrasts: when it’s good, it’s great, but when it’s bad, it’s been a stinker. So, in anticipation of the forthcoming freshened Fairlady, here’s a breakdown of the highs’and lows’of the Nissan Z-car throughout the past 50 years.

The long-awaited successor to the Nissan 370Z is finally becoming a reality ‘ and the all-new sports car could be revealed to the world within the next 12 months.

Tipped to be called the 400Z, it’s set to make use of a twin-turbocharged V6 offering greater levels of performance than its predecessor.

With the 370Z having been on sale with only minimal changes since 2009, rumours of what will replace it have been circulating for years.

Nissan recently filed a trademark application in Canada for a redesigned Z badge. It uses a retro font that harks back to the original Z car, the Datsun 240Z, and the later 260Z and 280Z.

Nissan’s New 400Z Channels Legendary Z Cars With Modern Power

Details about the long overdue and way-long in the tooth Nissan 370Z replacement are trickling in, and causing a fair bit of excitement during these uncertain times. In spite of Nissan’s current, desperate financial situation, the company is intent on delivering a barnstorming new Z car that can polish its once-enviable image’as the manufacturer of exciting cars, and to bring the fledgling company back into the black.

Autocar'(UK)‘reports that the new Z car will likely be called the 400Z, and its design language and especially front and rear treatments will very much be influenced by its predecessors, especially the original Nissan 240Z. The new car will also be going upmarket in terms of interior material and technology, with a digital instrument panel and the latest in infotainment and driver-assist features. Given Nissan’s’well-documented and aforementioned’monetary condition, all bets are that’the 400Z’will based on an Infiniti platform rather than a new and bespoke one.
