This Car Comes in Any Color You Want, So Long as It’s Valencia Red

the $160,000 NSX sports car. Automation figures in, of course. But, philosophically, at least, the robots are taking a back seat to the work being done by a small army of real people.

MARYSVILLE, Ohio ‘ For people in the market for an automobile largely built by hand and not robots, a few options come to mind. There are Rolls-Royce and Bentley, certainly. Or consider a $250,000 Ferrari made in the north of Italy, or maybe a $250,000 McLaren from the south of England.

In Marysville, at American Honda’s Performance Manufacturing Center, ‘hand built’ may overstate what’s unfolding on the assembly line. But a special PMC edition of the 2020 Acura TLX sports sedan is being built alongside its rich relation, the $160,000 NSX sports car.

All the better to show off the brilliant Valencia Red gloss of the TLX’s custom paint job (the one color available for the special edition).

Quite a lot has been going on:

Rare Rides: The 1978 Ford Fiesta, a German Car

But today we’re stepping back in time to 1978 to take a look at the genesis of Fiesta. The Fiestasis, if you will.

Notice the VW clone steering wheel? I worked at a Ford dealership part-time in the early 80’s and the technicians (mechanics) were not happy when asked to work on one of these, as they were different and therefore took more time than the run of the mill domestic Ford products.

It seems quite possible that most Ford techs didn’t have comprehensive sets of metric tools at the time.

I’m impressed that this car has its window cranks. I recall them being missing on the ones I rode in forty years ago. The US Fiestas had much larger engines than the ones sold in meaningful numbers on the other side of the pond, big enough to make up for the bumpers, door beams, and emissions controls that non-export cars lacked.

Are bike lane improvements working on Valencia Street? We asked the neighborhood

A pilot program to study protected bike lanes on Valencia began this January, but was limited to only two blocks between Duboce Ave and 15th street on Valencia. We asked area residents what if they thought the new bike lanes were making things safer.

* * *

Protected bike lanes on the rest of Valencia can’t come soon enough. There are currently so many cars blocking the lanes in the evening the lanes are useless: Lyft/Uber drivers and customers still illegally dropping/ picking up in the lanes; blocks with restaurants on them ‘ I’m particularly looking at Tacolicious and others between 18th and 19th ‘ are continuously blocked by delivery drivers picking up food. (Which is ridiculous ‘ food deliveries in the Mission area should be happening on bikes!) There should be white zones put in place on every block of Valencia before any more people get hurt.

Winners and Losers from the 2019 New York Auto Show ‘ The Short List

Press days at the 2019 New York International Auto Show are over. Which reveals impressed us most and which ones left us wanting for more?’

* * *

Subaru and Lincoln, Toyota, Acura, Cadillac and plenty of other automotive brands made news in Manhattan this week. From subcompact crossovers to luxury sedans, three-row utility vehicles to funky-looking concepts, plenty of significant products were unveiled. Naturally, we had some favorites plus a few we didn’t love quite as much, oh, even some vehicles that split the difference.

* * *

First up, the brand-new 2020 Toyota Highlander. This three-row family hauler has been completely redesigned from the foundation up. Now riding on a variant of the automaker’s ubiquitous TNGA architecture, it should provide more comfort, refinement and features than ever before. Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto will be standard, ditto for Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which includes things like road-sign recognition, adaptive cruise control and more. A 295-horsepower V6 engine hauls around mainline models but a hybrid drivetrain will also be offered. Gasoline-powered versions of this fourth-generation SUV should go on sale in December, the hybrid variant next February.
