If you are a girl looking to make big money as a professional athlete, this certainly is the message you got from the recently released Forbes list of the most highly paid female athletes.
Twelve of the top 15 earners are tennis players, led by Serena Williams who made $29.2 million last year. Only one, Alex Morgan, plays a team sport. Morgan, the co-captain of the U.S. women’s soccer team that just won the World Cup, is No. 12 on the list with total earnings last year of $5.8 million.

The World’s 50 Most Valuable Sports Teams 2019
The Dallas Cowboys kick off training camp this weekend as the defending NFC East champions. Last season ended with a playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams, which marked 23 straight years the Cowboys were shut out of the NFC Championship game. Only the Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions have longer title-game droughts.
But America’s Team remains the biggest must-see show in sports.’Nine of the 50 highest-rated sports TV broadcasts’in 2018 were regular season Cowboys games, helping goose ratings for CBS, NBC and Fox (the Patriots were the only other team with more than four games among the top 50).
Serena Williams, women’s sport and ensuring we leave the ‘bad old days’ behind
What worries me about this story gaining negative global traction again, is that it seemed as if attitudes towards female sports stars, women’s sports overall and their combined marketing worth, were starting to change.’
While there have been some positives this year – the Women’s World Cup is pushing brands to look at other women’s sports and other women’s sports stars – I cannot help worrying we are guilty of being swept along with the hype and after the final whistle everything will slowly revert back to the bad old days.
Even with the headwind of hype, investment is still only coming from just a handful of brands. In fact, most brands are still really sceptical of women’s sport because they fail to see the vast opportunities it offers.
