The agency has been working on “Kilopower” ‘ a project to use a nuclear reactor to generate clean energy on the Moon, Mars and beyond ‘ for some time. And now it will hold a press conference to reveal the latest results from its plans to unveil a new space exploration power system, it has said.

The conference will see the agency discuss the results of its latest experiments, it said in a release. It has been conducted from November 2017’through until March 2018, at the’Nevada National Security Site or NNSS.

NASA May Bring Nuclear Power To Space With Kilopower Announcement

NASA has been working on a Kilopower project that may provide a new way to power missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

The NASA Kilopower project has been in process since November of 2017 and we’ll see an announcement within the coming days regarding NASA’s progress on the technology and what exactly it might mean for our trips deeper into space.

In order to make missions to the Moon, Mars, and many other destinations a success, astronauts will need a way to produce power. Whether that’s for basic necessities like lighting, water, and oxygen or to accomplish objective such as running experiments or producing fuel to be used on the long journey back to Earth.

Kilopower is perhaps the most promising method by which astronauts could produce power for a potential moon or Mars base, and takes advantage of pioneering space fission power systems that could provide around 10 kilowatts of electrical power – enough to run two average households – for a period of ten years. This would be a phenomenal achievement that would make the trek deeper into space a real possibility. With our current technology, we only have a limited reach due to the limitations of power supplies and other key aspects of bringing humanity to other planets. If the kilopower project proves to be a success, we may be one step closer to expanding our reach beyond Earth – perhaps bringing the average person to outer pace within our lifetime.

The Kilopower prototype was designed and developed by the NASA Glenn Research Center in collaboration with the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and the Los Alamos National Laboratory, with the reactor core provided by the Y12 National Security Complex. The prototype power system was shipped from Cleveland to the Nevada National Security Site in late September.

NASA heading for Nuclear Power in Space

NASA is all set to announce its major project of setting up nuclear power within space. The name which has been given to the project is ‘Kilopower’. It is considered as a project which will allow the nuclear reactor to bring about clean energy on Mars, Moon and even beyond that. Now it has all the plans to hold a press conference to disclose all the latest information about the different experiments that have come up from its mission of nuclear space exploration. The agency in its latest press release has said it will unfold all the latest developments that have come up from this long run mission. This experiment is being conducted from November 2017 until the end of March 18, which is being held at the Nevada National Security Site or which is popularly known as NNSS.

This particular site has been used for a long duration for the purpose of nuclear testing. One of the major examples of the nuclear experiment that had been conducted was the detonating process of the nuclear bombs that was felt across the state and also into the city of Las Vegas. It was considered as a major expedition.

In a similar fashion, NASA expects that the Kilopower will also be capable of using the same nuclear technology and power so that the same amount of energy is generated which can be used by the space explorers on their way to the solar system. This energy will be consumed by the space explorers for a varied number of tasks. These tasks will include generating light, oxygen as well as water. These elements will be required to send valuable information back to earth. This is the prime reason why NASA is focusing on developing Kilopwer which will be widely used for generating safe and valuable energy which will make the space exploration process smooth and efficient.

This Kilopower will be able to generate power up to a magnitude of 10 kilowatts of electrical energy, which is quite sufficient to run two households, for a period spanning over 10 long years.

This quantum of energy will allow the astronauts to execute their work wherever they are. For instance, if people are on Mars, the amount of such strong energy coming from the sun will hugely vary.
