SpaceX broadband service will be ‘bumpy’ at first, Gwynne Shotwell says

December 7, 2019

When SpaceX’s broadband service starts mid-2020, the initial experience will be ‘bumpy,’ company President Gwynne Shotwell said Friday.

Six to eight launches would bring them up to Musk’s “minor” coverage by mid-2020 and, if they maintain the same launch rate, they will achieve “moderate” coverage around the end of the year. But, what is meant by “minor” and “moderate” coverage? A simulation by Mark Handley, a professor at University College London, provides an approximation of the answer.

Getting there will require the company to launch six to eight batches of satellites, Shotwell told reporters during a media roundtable. SpaceX also has to finish the design and engineering of the user terminals, which is not a minor challenge, Shotwell acknowledged.

But SpaceX can start offering service well before all the satellites are launched. While the northern United States and Canada seem to be first in line to get service, SpaceX’recently asked‘the FCC to approve an orbital-spacing change that would let the company also cover the southern United States by the end of next year.

SpaceX says more Starlink orbits will speed service, reduce launch needs

WASHINGTON ‘SpaceX is asking federal regulators to allow it to spread out satellites in more rings around the Earth, saying the tweak to its orbital plans could bring coverage to the southern United States in time for next year’s hurricane season.’

‘The proposed respacing would require fewer launches of satellites ‘ perhaps as few as half ‘ to initiate service to the entire contiguous United States,’ SpaceX told the FCC Aug. 30. ‘Globally, the modification would enable more rapid coverage of all longitudes to grow toward the Equator, as well as bolstering capacity over in areas of greater population density.’
